MEP conducted a desk-based review, from recent information on the Chilean hake stock and artisanal, small and large industrial fisheries. This provided the client with an up-to-date conclusion on the status of the stock and an assessment of how current total (reported and unreported) fishing effort was likely to be affecting the status of the stock
MEP also provided a qualitative analysis of how fisheries management measures associated with each of the fisheries were contributing to stock status and recovery potential; as well as benchmarking the current information against the most recent pre-assessment. This identified where scoring indicators for MSC Principles 1 (Sustainable fish stocks) and 2 (Minimising environmental impact) were likely to have changed and where outstanding knowledge gaps existed.
