The FAD Fishery Pilot Programme was being developed by FAO Somalia, in cooperation with the Government of Somalia.
The objective of the project was to establish a trial FAD fishery in Somalia, with the aim of increasing landings of pelagic fish that would otherwise pass by Somalia on migration; reducing the fishing pressure on coastal demersal fisheries; improve the quality of landings; increase market values through regularity of supply; encourage the use of low impact and sustainable fishing techniques.
MEP identified suitable sites for the FAD deployment and then supervised the deployment on the selected positions. MEP then carried out ongoing monitoring of fishing efforts and catch quantity.
