Falklands Island Government asked MEP to determine an economic baseline for the current management and performance of the finfish fishery and to design the new TAC/TAE management system, following our recommendations in a previous project MEP were involved with.
This initial phase of the project requires close collaborative working between MEP, Falkland Islands Government and, preferably, the Industry (Fishing Companies, FIFCA) to ensure common understanding and agreement on where the system was, what (economic) results it is producing and where key stakeholders want to see change. Once the baseline is established and agreed, the work can move on to the other elements.
MEP also proposed extending to a technical mentoring role for the new Director of Fisheries, Fisheries Economists and/or other new or existing FIFD staff members.
