The Environment Agency undertook flood defense works and coastal strengthening along the foreshore at Hythe, Kent where rock and shingle deliveries had an likely impact on local fishing businesses in the surrounding areas. Local vessels target the inshore area and fishing methods include trawling, static nets and potting.
MEP provided services in relation to fisheries liaison advising the fleet in advance of activities and loss adjustment to fishermen affected by the exclusion zone. The works continued for several months and over a dozen fishermen from Folkstone, Hythe and Dungeness were affected. To compensate for the temporary loss of grounds payments were made to top up earnings to previous levels.
