A major study was carried out on the Role of Women in Fisheries in all the thirteen coastal European Union states. Teams in each country investigated participation in fishing, aquaculture, marketing and distribution, processing, administration and informal roles such as wives in supporting roles. A country study was included in the report for each country. The ultimate purpose of the study was the promotion of social and economic cohesion throughout the regions and the promotion of equal opportunities and rights for men and women. The five key areas covered were: Employment data, Legal and social status, Organisational, Socio-cultural constraints and Economic.
